Government of the United Earth Alliance

The Government of the United Earth Alliance had an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch.

[edit] Executive Branch

The executive branch was embodied by the office of the President and the office of the Premier.

The President was a single elected office governing the entire Alliance as the head of state.

The Premier was a conglomeration of elected offices, one per world in the Alliance, and together representing the Alliance as a whole with equal power to the President.

[edit] Legislative Branch

The legislative branch was embodied by the Assembly, a tiered democratic council. Anyone could run for the Assembly so long as they could speak, age or criminal record was not an issue.

Typically, the Assemblies of each world only discussed matters affecting their own world. If something affected the United Earth Alliance as a whole, the Assembly of Earth had seniority, but the Assemblies of other worlds could send in their votes. Because of the length of time in hyperspace travel early on, most votes were cast by secure computer over the course of several months.

The head of the Assembly on each world was the Prime Minister. If there needed to be a face-to-face meeting of multiple United Earth Alliance officials on Earth, the Prime Minister of each world was sent.

The judicial branch was embodied by the Judicial Services Bureau, a council selected by lottery. Rather than have any appointed position, citizens could volunteer to serve in any judicial process, and were randomly-selected for any trial on the basis of experience and merit.
