Matthias "One-Wing" Carter (born September 13, 2059) is one of the pilots made famous by the Second Exodus War. Like Emil Torsc, who he served under in Scimitar Squadron, Carter has a reputation for cruelty. Unlike Torsc, Carter actually deserves this reputation.

[edit] The First Exodus War
Matthias Carter was a starship navigator during the First Exodus War, and saw little of the fighting other than piloting his ship from place to place. He had a natural talent for navigating in space, and could make starships practically dance on command. Despite his talent, he was packed up and shipped off with the rest of the Torimur exiles.
[edit] Project Raven
When the Torimur exiles returned to the Sol Sector and took covert control of the Alpha Centauri System, Carter was hand-picked to be one of the "Raven's Wings" test pilots in the Onyx Empire's "Project Raven."
During the project's test of the YF-4 prototype of the F-4 Raven, Carter suffered an ammunition explosion during atmospheric reentry. His prototype, F04-Y03, lost a wing in the explosion and nearly entered a fatal tailspin. Carter was able to correct the flight path and bring the prototype in for an incredibly non-explosive crash landing. The feat earned him the nickname "One-Wing", which stuck with him throughout his career.

After leaving the Raven's Wings and becoming a flight instructor, Carter was assigned to the Royal Imperial Navy's Air Arm, under the command of Emil Torsc. Carter was given the Navy rank of Captain.
As a member of Scimitar Squadron, Carter was often in the front lines, and racked up an impressive 89 fighter kills.
[edit] The Imperial Civil War
Carter's loyalties were to Torimur's ideals of independence; not to Lucius Black's imperialism. Despite his cruel and often sadistic tendencies, Carter was the model of effeciency as a commander and a pilot. He joined the Prefecture in the struggle, and was given his own squadron in the Prefecture Air Force.
He was busted down a few ranks after committing several acts of insubordination and even a few minor war crimes. He was discharged from the Air Force and stripped of his rank and pension, but allowed to continue flying with the rank of Lieutenant in the Prefecture Galactic Navy's Air Arm. Since his disciplinary hearing and sentencing, the now Lieutenant Commander Carter has become a model officer, if a little gruff and very egotistical. Carter serves as Charlene Rearden's second in command.
