[edit] History
When the Imperial Civil War broke out, the armies of the Empire and the Prefecture were evenly divided. The Prefecture's Legion of the Phoenix had great difficulties fighting its battles against the Empire. Their command structure was convoluted due to multiple diverse Imperial units joining their ranks, and they had no clear leadership. If not for their allies, the Prefecture would have been squashed.
After the defeat of the Empire, the Legion was made into the first of the Legion Corps, a much more effective fighting force. General Travis Carpenter, a legendary tactical genius and top-ace Rig pilot, was given supreme command of the ground forces.
The Army is the oldest and most traditional of the Prefecture's forces, tracing its roots far into the mists of time. The Legion Corps was formed from the rebelling Legion of the Phoenix, which was a part of the Royal Imperial Army. The Royal Imperial Army was trained by survivors of the Torimur Security forces, which trained by former United Earth Alliance Army members. From there, the history goes back to the United States of America, and so on until the dawn of Terran history.
With such a rich history, it isn't surprising that the Legion Corps has many traditions and habits developed over the centuries.
[edit] Structure
The Legion Corps is made up of three components: active-duty (the Legions), garrison (the Guard), and reserve troops. The Guard are active duty troops, but are not deployed abroad except in an emergency. Reserve troops are paid 20% of the pay of active duty troops, and usually live non-military lives while training once a month.
The Legion Corps is led by the General of the Army, who reports to the Prefect.
[edit] Legions
In times of peace, the Legion Corps only has four Legions, but in times of war as many as six full Legions can be activated from the reserve troops. The Legions have 90,426,560 active duty soldiers, and 135,639,840 reserve soldiers.
- The Legion of the Phoenix is the Corps' command Legion, led by the General of the Army and headquartered on Estelis in the Ueda District.
- The Legion of the Wolf is the Corps' main expeditionary Legion, sent first to any operation the Prefecture decides to get involved in. It is headquartered on Tavou in the Tavou District.
- The Legion of the Tiger is the Corps' main training Legion, where new officers and troops go for specialized training in times of peace. It is headquartered on Labrea in the Laojiu District.
- The Legion of the Dragon is the Corps' experimental equipment shakedown Legion. It is the first Legion to get new weapons, and has many projects under its direction. It is headquartered on Tejat, capital of the Tejat District.
- The Legion of the Titan is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
- The Legion of the Hydra is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
- The Legion of the Serpent is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
- The Legion of the Reaper is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
- The Legion of the Badger is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
- The Legion of the Fox is a reserve Legion, only called up in time of war.
[edit] District Guard
Each District; Tejat, Laojiu, Tavou, Ueda and Ward has a Guard command, typically a single Division. The Guard keeps a total of 11,303,320 active duty soldiers.
[edit] Organization
The Prefecture's Legion Corps is a division-based force, with operational command of each Division in a Legion given to its respective commanders. Unit make-up is broken up at Combat Group level.
[edit] Legion
Legions are the highest level of organization, commanded by a General. A Legion has two Operational Directorates; one commanded by the General of the Legion, and one commanded by a Lieutenant General. All Hunter Companies in the Legion report to Hunter Battalion Command, headquartered with the Legion. The average Legion has a total of 22,650,240 soldiers.
[edit] Operational Directorate
Operational Directorates are commanded by a Lieutenant General, with a supporting Colonel. Operational Directorates can handle entire planetary hemispheres of combat without outside support. All Cerebus Companies in the Operational Directorate report to Cerebus Battalion Command, headquartered with the Operational Directorate. Operational Directorates consist of five Divisions for an average total of 11,325,120 soldiers.
[edit] Division
A Division is commanded by a Major General, with a supporting Lieutenant Colonel. Divisions operate with significant autonomy from their Operational Directorate and can cover a large geographical area by themselves. A Division consists of four Brigades of varying organization. The average Division size is 2,265,024 soldiers.
[edit] Brigade
All Brigades are commanded by Brigadiers, with a supporting Major. Brigades have three Regiments of varying organization, and an attached Hunter Company for an average total of 566,256 soldiers.
[edit] Regiment
All Regiments are commanded by Colonels, with a supporting Captain. All Regiments have six Battalions of varying organization, and an attached Cerebus Company. for an average total of 188,732 soldiers.
[edit] Battalion
All Battalions are led by Lieutenant Colonels, with a supporting First Lieutenant. All Battalions have a Support Group, an Artillery Group, an Engineer Group, and an Aviation Group (11860), and six types of dedicated attack Combat Groups. The smallest possible Battalion would be made of six Heavy Assault Groups and the four supporting lesser-combat groups for a total of 25,678 soldiers. The largest possible Battalion would be made of six Airborne Groups and the four supporting lesser-combat groups for a total of 37,096 soldiers. The average Battalion size is 31,387 soldiers.
[edit] Combat Groups
All Combat Groups are led by Majors, with a supporting Sergeant Major. Combat Groups are rarely single levels of organization. They often have several combined arms teams.
- Heavy Assault Groups are tailored towards heavy attacks on fixed enemy positions. They do not emphasize mobility and focus instead on raw firepower. A Heavy Assault Group has two Rig Companies (typically with the heaviest rig designs available), three Tank Companies (typically with Main Battle Tanks, an Artillery Battery, and an Infantry Company attached to the Artillery Battery. Depending on the Major's training and preference, they can command from any of these Companies. Most tend to operate a rig both out of Legion Corps tradition and for its balance of mobility, firepower and defense. Heavy Assault Groups have a total of 2303 soldiers.
- Air Cavalry Groups are tailored towards extremely mobile assault, force containment, interception of enemy assets, and counter-guerilla warfare. They do not emphasize heavy assault, sacrificing firepower to combine air mobility with ground combat. An Air Cavalry Group has two Infantry Companies (where the Major and Sergeant Major usually operate) and four Aviation Lances, for a total of 304 VTOLs and 3560 soldiers.
- Airborne Groups are attached to the Prefecture Air Force as a first strike group. They have extremely high initial mobility until they drop, followed by good ground mobility and moderate firepower. They are designed to get behind enemy lines and fight back towards the front or capture a major airport or spaceport to bring in heavier weapons. Airborne Groups are often supported by the Prefecture Marine Corps, but usually are only deployed after the Marines have already "kicked in the door" on a planet. Airborne Groups have three Infantry Companies (typically where the Major and Sergeant Major operate), two Tank Companies (made up of lighter tanks), and a Rig Company (made up exclusively of light rigs), for a total of 4206 soldiers.
- Mobile Assault Groups emphasize ground-based mobility and firepower. They are well-suited for combat patrol, recon in force, ground superiority, and assaulting enemies that are on the move. Mobile Assault Groups are made up of four Tank Companies (often outfitted with Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Medium Tanks) and two Infantry Companies for a total of 3448 soldiers. The Major and Sergeant Major's headquarters is usually within one of the Tank Companies.
- Artillery Groups are dedicated bombardment groups. They do not operate independently or deploy without their attached battalion. The Major and Sergeant Major have an established headquarters, usually in a mobile command post for more mobile operations or in a bunker on long-term deployments. Artillery Groups have six Artillery Batteries for a total of 162 soldiers.
- Support Groups are dedicated logistics and support groups. They do not operate independently or deploy without their attached battalion. The Major and Sergeant Major usually operate from an established headquarters in the region of the supply dumps or warehouses, well behind the front lines in safe zones. Support Groups have five Logistics Companies and a single Aviation Lance (outfitted with transport VTOLs for quick supply drops). Support Groups also have a dedicated liaison to the Prefecture Air Force to call in transport aircraft as needed. Support Groups have a total of 2554 soldiers.
- Aviation Groups are dedicated ground attack groups. They are organized exclusively to harass enemy forces from the air using VTOLs. Aviation Groups have six Aviation Lances, outfitted with attack and gunship VTOLs, for a total of 456 VTOLs and 1824 soldiers.
- Engineer Groups are specialist construction and demolition groups. They do not operate or deploy in combat conditions without their attached battalion, but can operate and deploy in non-combat situations such as natural disasters and emergencies independent of any combat support. Engineer Groups have six Engineering Companies for a total of 7320 soldiers.
[edit] Company
All Companies are led by Captains, with a supporting Master Sergeant.
- Infantry Companies have a Company Section (the Captain, the Master Sergeant, two flankers and four Infantry Squads) and four Infantry Platoons for a total of 1,172 soldiers.
- Tank Companies have a Company Section (five tanks with the Captain and the Master Sergeant in the lead tank) and four Tank Platoons, for a total of 276 soldiers.
- Rig Companies have a Company Section (the Captain's and Master Sergeant's rigs and 8 escorting rigs) and four Rig Platoons, for a total of 138 soldiers.
- Artillery Batteries are the Company equivalent in artillery. They typically have five towed or self-propelled guns, and the crews to operate them. The Captain and Master Sergeant in charge of an Artillery Battery act as communications officers in the chain of command and answer to the Combat Group commander. Artillery Batteries have a total of 27 soldiers.
- Aviation Lances are made up of four VTOLs (one for the Captain, one for the Master Sergeant, and two escorts), and six Aviation Flights, for a total of 76 VTOLs and 304 soldiers.
- Logisitics Companies are dedicated supply line and support teams. They have no set equipment load, but usually operate trucks and trailers for mobile support, and establish warehouses and supply dumps for non-mobile support. A Logistics Company typically has 450 soldiers with varying jobs.
- Engineering Companies are dedicated to demolitions and construction under combat conditions. They have a Company Section (the Captain, the Master Sergeant, two Infantry flankers, an Engineer Squad and three Infantry Squads) and four Engineering Platoons for a total of 1220 soldiers.
- Cerebus Companies have an attached Prefecture Galactic Navy liaison and a Navy dropship at their disposal at all times. The Captain of a Cerebus Company will usually operate from the dropship, or from a rig, depending on the tactical situation. Cerebus Companies have six Cerebus Teams, for a total of 420 soldiers.
- Hunter Companies have an attached Prefecture Air Force liaison and a transport aircraft at their disposal. Hunter Companies can deploy via orbital drop pod, parachute, runway, or VTOL dustoff if the mission warrants. Hunter Companies have six Hunter Teams, for a total of 60 soldiers. The Captain of the Hunter Company always goes into battle with the rest of the Company.
[edit] Platoon
All Platoons are led by First Lieutenants, with a supporting by a Sergeant First Class.
- Infantry Platoons have a Platoon Squad (the First Lieutenant, the Sergeant First Class, two flankers, and four Fire Teams) and three Infantry Sections for a total of 272 soldiers.
- Tank Platoons have a Platoon Command Tank (with the First Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant) and three Tank Sections, for a typical total of 64 soldiers.
- Rig Platoons have a Platoon Squad (the First Lieutenant's and Staff Sergeant's Rigs) and three Rig Sections, for a total of 32 soldiers.
- Aviation Flights are made up of two VTOLs (one for the First Lieutenant and one for the Sergeant First Class), and five Aviation Elements, for a total of 12 VTOLs and 48 soldiers.
- Engineering Platoons have a Command Squad (the Fire Lieutenant, the Sergeant First Class, two Infantry flankers and four Infantry Fire Teams), and three Engineer Elements for a total of 284 soldiers.
- Cerebus Teams have five Cerebus Elements, for a total of 70 soldiers.
- Hunter Teams have five Hunter Elements, and are the typical deployment strength for an Army Hunters mission. The First Lieutenant is in command of the Hunter Team, and the other members of the team all hold the rank of Second Lieutenant. A Hunter Team has a total of 10 soldiers.
[edit] Section
All Sections are led by Second Lieutenants, with a supporting Staff Sergeant.
- Infantry Sections have a Section Team (the Second Lieutenant, the Staff Sergeant, and two flankers), and four Infantry Squads for a total of 84 soldiers.
- Tank Sections have five tanks, with the Second Lieutenant in command of the lead tank. Tank Sections vary based on their arsenal, but typically have a total of 20 soldiers.
- Rig Sections have a Section Squad (the Second Lieutenant's and Staff Sergeant's Rigs) and four Rig squads, for a total of 10 soldiers.
- Aviation Elements are a team of two VTOLs. The Second Lieutenant commands one, the Staff Sergeant commands the other, for a total of 8 soldiers.
- Engineer Elements have a Command Team (the Second Lieutenant, the Staff Sergeant, and two infantry flankers for defense), a defensive Fire Team (a typical Infantry Fire Team), and four Engineer Squads for a total of 88 soldiers.
- Cerebus Elements are part of the Cerebus Force and are a specialty combined arms organization. A Cerberus Element has a single Infantry Fighting Vehicle (commanded by the Second Lieutenant and with a total crew of three), two Infantry Fire Teams, and three light rigs (one of which is operated by the Staff Sergeant), for a total of 14 soldiers.
- Hunter Elements are part of the Army Hunters and are a specialty covert operations organization. A Hunter Element has two Army Hunters. In order to even qualify for the Army Hunters, a soldier must hold a commissioned rank of Second Lieutenant or higher. Neither has command of the Hunter Element, and they work as a team of equals.
[edit] Squad
All Squads are led by Sergeants.
- Infantry Squads are led by Sergeants. Every Squad has a Command Team (the Sergeant, the senior Corporal, and two flankers), and four Fire Teams, for a total of 20 soldiers.
- Tanks Squads are a single tank operating team. Tanks typically take a crew of four to operate. Some Main Battle Tanks can take up to six, but some tank designs only have a single operator.
- Rig Squads are a team of two Rigs.
- VTOL Squads are a single VTOL operating team. Some VTOLs take a full crew of four to operate, some take two, and some only require a single operator. All VTOL Squads have 4 soldiers, who rotate operation depending on the type of VTOL they are assigned to use.
- Engineer Squads are demolitions and construction experts. They have a total of twenty soldiers, equipped with light personal defense weapons, explosives, and a vast array of tools.
[edit] Fire Team
The Fire Team is exclusively an Infantry level of organization. Tanks are operated by large crews, and Rigs are too expensive to field in the same numbers as infantry.
An Infantry Fire Team consists of four soldiers: the Fire Team leader (usually a Corporal), a rear-gaurd and two flankers.
Each man on the Fire Team can be equipped with any individual combat weapon in the Legion Corps' arsenal, or the entire team can operate a single crew-served infantry weapon.
Some Fire Teams are specialty units: an Infantry Squad will typically have a Sniper Team, SAW Team, or Heavy Weapons Team. Squads rarely have more than one specialty team.
[edit] Army Components
In times of peace, the Legions exist as a volunteer force, augmented by Reserves. The Draft is in place, but only activated in the event of a major interstellar war. The current call-up order is as follows:
First is the four active duty Legions, followed by activating the Reserves into the remaining six Legions. Should these numbers prove insufficient, the Guard are fully activated into an offensive force. Next, all retired personnel fit for military duty are recalled. Next, the Draft is activated, and as many able-bodied men and women as possible are put under arms. Everything that follows is considered a "worst-case catastrophe scenario."
Should the draft fail, local law-enforcement are militarized, and all people, regardless of age and ability, are put under arms in the unorganized militia. This has never been done by any star-faring civilization.
[edit] Infantry
Main Article: Infantry
The "ground pounders" are the backbone of any modern army. The Legion Corps is known for its rigs, but its infantry are of paramount importance to its tactics and the way it wages war.
[edit] Rigs
Main Article: Rigs
Rigs are an example of effective, yet imperfect thinking. The Prefecture Legion Corps is the only army in the galaxy to field these monstrosities in any significant numbers. In theory, the Rig is a perfect weapon: a superb heavy weapons platform, a highly mobile fighter, capable of moving over broken terrain without slowing down. Unfortunately, its upright stance gives it a high target profile, and its leg actuators are a highly visible weak spot. Still, the Legions use their Rigs to great effect. The Hercules, Apollo and Hades Rigs fill a number of combat roles.
[edit] Tanks and Vehicles
Main Article: Tanks and Vehicles
Tanks play a lesser role in the Legions than in other armies. Even the Prefecture's Marine Corps recognizes the value of a highly trained group of tank drivers. The Legions field vehicles like the Wolverine light hover tank, the Condor Main Battle Tank, and utility vehicles like ammo trucks, salvage rigs, and APCs.

[edit] Cerebus Force (Special Forces)
Main Article: Cerebus Force
Cerebus Force has evolved a long way since its inception as a small Rig recon unit in the Royal Imperial Army. Cerebus Force is now a Regiment-level unit, and is a flexible, highly-trained and rapidly deployable light Rig and armor force with specialized skills that help them deploy against a variety of conventional and special operations targets. Cerebus specializes in light armor and Rig direct action operations, raids, infiltration and exfiltration by orbital drop or overland, spaceport seizure, capture of equipment, and support of regular Legion forces. Each Cerebus Battalion can deploy anywhere in the Prefecture within 26 hours' notice, and anywhere within the Gate network in 3 days.
[edit] Army Hunters (Special Forces)
Main Article: Army Hunters
Army Hunters are the best of the Prefecture Legion Corps' Special Forces, with training and mission profiles centered around covert assault, though Hunters are extremely versatile and quite capable of taking on a number of mission profiles. The Hunters rarely conduct missions that make the headlines or become public record, but with the Prefecture's cavalier attitude towards killing, assassination missions are probably commonplace.
[edit] Air Cavalry
Main Article: Air Cavalry
While sustained, level flight is traditionally the field of the Air Force, the Legions maintain a large number of attack and transport helicopters. Since making contact and establishing trade ties with the Taviridis Somarchada, helicopter rotors have been replaced by anti-gravity VTOL lift systems, but the name "helicopter", "chopper" and "copter" have stuck. The backbone is the UH-3D Skyhawk an extremely versatile gunship, troop transport, and cargo carrier. For heavier combat roles, the AH-4C Lightning, a dedicated assault copter, is brought to bear.
