[edit] History

The importance of a strong navy became very clear after the long Imperial Civil War. The losses on the surface were staggering, and could have been avoided with a clear naval superiority in orbit. The Prefecture Galactic Navy was placed under the direct control of Fleet Admiral Robert Marshall and ordered to go through drastic reorganization and overhaul.

In the year 2324, the reorganization was complete. The new Prefecture Galactic Navy is organized into a monolithic system of Fleets, installations, air commands, special forces, and space stations. Altogether, the Navy is led by the Fleet Admiral, one of the most important members of the military command. In the days of the Empire, the rank was known as the Grand Admiral, and was actually the commander-in-chief of the Empire's military.

[edit] Fleets of the Line

The Fleets are divided into two types: Fleets of the Line, and Core Fleets. The Fleets of the Line are led by the Admirals, the best tacticians and warship commanders available. Most of the Admirals were commanders in the Prefecture Navy during the Torimur Civil War and the Battle of Earth, but some are fresh out of the Navy Academy. The Core Fleets are led by Vice Admirals, who are often up-and-coming go-getters, but are also frequently older officers nearing the end of their careers.

The First Fleet operates in international space, both as a show of force and on diplomatic missions. The The First Fleet is based on Estel Mundis, and its flagship is the FDS Jerome Black (BG-1). The First Fleet is also the home of Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), under the command of Fleet Admiral Robert Marshall.

The Second Fleet, nicknamed "The Hammers", operates in the Tavou District. It is based out of Tavou, and its flagship is FDS Triumph (BG-2).

The Third Fleet operates in the Ueda District. It is based on Albanus, and its flagship is the FDS Delphinus (BG-3). The Third Fleet is under the direct command of the Prefect.

The Fourth Fleet operates in the Ward District. It is based on Holt, and its flagship is the FDS Victory (BG-4). The Fourth Fleet is also the home of Naval Air Command.

The Fifth Fleet operates in the Laojiu District. It is based on Casere, and its flagship is the FDS Judicator (BG-5).

The Sixth Fleet operates in the Tejat District. It is based on Tejat, and its flagship is the FDS Bastion (BG-6).

The names of commissioned ships of the Galactic Navy start with "FDS", designating 'Federated Districts Ship'. Additionally, each ship is given a letter-based hull classification symbol to indicate the vessel's type and a hull number. The names of ships are officially selected by the Fleet Admiral.

The Navy has more equipment than any of the other branches of the military. Huge, unique Battleships are built as Flagships (BG) for the Fleets of the Line. Aircraft Carriers (CV) of staggering size and capacity defend the Fleets from bomber attack and serve as flagships for the Core Fleets, while smaller Light Carriers (CVL), Attack Carriers (CVA), and Escort Carriers (CVE) fill a wide variety of roles. Versatile Cruisers (CG) and unshakeable Battlecruisers (CG) fill the upper ends of Fleet numbers, while powerful Destroyers (DG) smash through enemy defenses, and agile Frigates (FG) run point defense. Finally, mysterious and silent, subspace ships (SG) ply the dark regions of this mysterious lower dimension.

In its other areas of responsibility, the Navy calls on planetary orbit stations (PS), stellar orbit stations (SS), and deep space stations (GS) as resupply depots and observation posts. The Navy also uses a wide variety of support ships: freighters (AK), hospital ships (AH), and enormous dropships known as landing ships (LS).

[edit] Planetside Installations

The Navy has multiple installations on planetary surfaces. They are typically commanded by Rear Admirals or Commodores, depending on the size and role of the installations. Military starports are the largest, with Marine complements, military aircraft landing strips, and launching/receiving facillities for starships capable of atmospheric landings. Naval Air Command installations are the home of second-line Navy pilot squadrons, where new pilots learn the ropes and older pilots end their careers. Marine bases are also subject to the scrutiny of the Navy chain-of-command, though a Marine flag rank is typically in direct command.

[edit] Space Stations

Space Stations are numerous and have multiple roles. There are stations in planetary orbit, stellar orbit, and deep space. Typically, they serve as ports of call, cargo transfer points, static defenses, and forward Naval Air Command bases. A Space Station is usually under the command of a Commodore.

[edit] Naval Air Arm

The Naval Air Command is in charge of the fighters, bombers, dropships and shuttles used by the Fleets, installations and all other areas needed. The fighting Navy aviators are under the command of the Fleet Air Arms.

Aircraft are an important part of the Galactic Navy's fighting capacity. Carrier-based aircraft are able to strike space, air, sea, and land targets far from a carrier while protecting friendly forces from enemy aircraft and ships.

Currently, the Naval Air Arm uses the Valkyrie, Ocelot, and Gyrfalcon carrier-based aircraft. The Navy also uses C-series dropships like the Air Force and Marines do.

The Naval Air Arm has three squadron designations: Fighter Squadrons are given the prefix "VF", bomber squadrons are given the prefix "VB", and cargo squadrons are given the prefix "VC." Squadrons usually have an official emblem or mascot which the squadron quartermaster paints on the wings or tails of the aircraft, and pilots are often allowed to design their own nose art.

Each of the Fleets has an Air Arm. All space stations and planetside installations' air squadrons are under the command of a District Air Arm.

[edit] Engineering Command

Engineering Command is responsible for a lot of research into new fields of technology. Recent advancements include gravity manipulation technology, and matter/antimatter mix reactors.

[edit] Uniforms

The Galactic Navy has four uniforms: the Utillity Uniform and the Dress Uniform are the only ones used by its sailors, but the Field Combat Uniform is used by Navy Special Forces, and Air Arm pilots use the Space Combat Jumpsuit. All uniforms include a shoulder patch with their branch of service.

The Dress Uniform is a simple affair: black slacks, a gray shirt, a black overcoat, and a gold belt. Enlisted receive a hat with a silver band, while officers wear a hat with a gold band and have gold braiding on their shoulders. The Dress Uniform is worn with full rank insignia and any badges and medals the soldier has received.

The Utillity Uniform is designed for maximum comfort and flexibility in confined spaces. A one-piece undergarment is designed to draw moisture away from the body without binding or irritation. It has gray trousers, black boots, and a khaki jacket with black trim. The only patches allowed on a utillity uniform are the branch of service patch, and rank patches.

[edit] Weapon Systems

The Galactic Navy's shipboard weapon systems are focused on two weapon types: cannons and missiles.

Three cannon types, the Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), Gauss Cannon (GC), and Relativistic Mass Driver (RMD), fill important roles in Naval Combat. The RMD serves as a main weapon, capable of splitting a planet in half if fired correctly. Gauss Cannons serve as a more restrained weapon of choice, when the target needs to be disabled instead of destroyed outright. The CIWS is a point-defense system, designed to shoot down targets within a few dozen kilometers of a warship.

Only one type of Missile System is used for ship to ship combat: the Anti-Warship Torpedo (AWT) is the only one with the propulsion, warhead, and gravity breaching systems necessary to actually pierce a warship's shields. The other types are used for different roles. The Tactical Land Attack Missile (TLAM) is used for attacking surface targets, in anything from a pinpoint cruise strike to an all-out "level all of civilization" bombardment. Anti-Air Missiles (AAM) are used as a longer-range defense system against fighters and bombers.

[edit] Special Forces

The Navy STARS (Space TActical Rapid Strike) teams are the elite special forces under the command of the Navy. They train for and execute boarding operations against hostile enemy warships. STARS teams train in zero gravity, high gravity, and how to survive explosive decompression. As a mandatory part of their training, a STARS candidate must go into an airlock with no helmet, while a trainer cycles it. The candidate must find a helmet secured in the airlock and reattach it. Their training also includes breaching hulls, surreptitious entries, and close-range heavy weapons use.

STARS teams operate off of Line Fleet Flagships, and off of Attack Carriers. Most boarding operations are handled by the Marine Corps, but Navy STARS lead high-liability insertions.
