[edit] History

The Royal Imperial Army's first combat engagement was the Imperial invasion of Earth in 2315. Despite the extreme youth of the majority of its soldiers, it had the advantage of numbers, training and equipment. They swept the planet's defenses, and consistently won battles as the Onyx Empire swept through the United Earth Alliance's worlds.

It wasn't until the United Mesarthrim Clans entered the war that the Royal Imperial Army found itself outclassed. The Imperial Army often held numerical superiority over the Mesarthrim, but the Mesarthrim's Anderung-based technology was too much for the Empire's weaponry to overcome.

The United Mesarthrim Clans and United Earth Alliance's coalition forces were soon bolstered by several million rebelling Royal Imperial Army units, which eventually became the Prefecture Legion Corps. The Royal Imperial Army fell, and most of its surviving personnel were absorbed into the Prefecture, or tried for war crimes.

[edit] Structure

The Royal Imperial Army was made up of two components: front-line (the Field Armies) and garrison (the Imperial Guard). The Imperial Guard were active duty troops, but were not deployed outside of Imperial worlds.

The Royal Imperial Army was led by the General of the Army, who reported to the Emperor.

[edit] Field Armies

The Royal Imperial Army had eight Field Armies, each given no special name other than a number. The Field Armies had a total of 181,201,920 active duty soldiers.

[edit] Imperial Guard

The Imperial Guard had a total of 19 Divisions, one on each of the Onyx Empire's worlds. The Guard kept a total of 43,035,456 active duty soldiers.

[edit] Organization

The Royal Imperial Army was a division-based force, with operational command of each Division in a Field Army given to its respective commanders. Unit make-up was broken up at Combat Group level.

[edit] Field Army

Field Armies were the highest level of organization, commanded by a General. A Field Army had ten Divisions. The average Field Army had a total of 22,650,240 soldiers.

[edit] Division

A Division was commanded by a Major General, with a supporting Lieutenant Colonel. Divisions operated with significant autonomy from their Field Army and can cover a large geographical area by themselves. A Division consisted of four Brigades of varying organization. The average Division size was 2,265,024 soldiers.

[edit] Brigade

All Brigades were commanded by Brigadiers, with a supporting Major. Brigades had three Regiments of varying organization for an average total of 566,256 soldiers.

[edit] Regiment

All Regiments were commanded by Colonels, with a supporting Captain. All Regiments have six Battalions of varying organization, for an average total of 188,732 soldiers.

[edit] Battalion

All Battalions were led by Lieutenant Colonels, with a supporting First Lieutenant. All Battalions had an Artillery Group and a Support Group, and eight types of dedicated attack Combat Groups. The average Battalion size was 31,387 soldiers.

[edit] Combat Groups

All Combat Groups were led by Majors, with a supporting Sergeant Major. Combat Groups were rarely single levels of organization. They often had several combined arms teams.

  • Heavy Assault Groups were tailored towards heavy attacks on fixed enemy positions. They did not emphasize mobility and focused instead on raw firepower. A Heavy Assault Group had two Rig Companies (typically with the heaviest rig designs available), three Tank Companies (typically with Main Battle Tanks, an Artillery Battery, and an Infantry Company attached to the Artillery Battery. Depending on the Major's training and preference, they could command from any of these Companies. Most tended to operate a rig. Heavy Assault Groups had a total of 2303 soldiers.
  • Airborne Groups were attached to the Royal Imperial Air Force as a first strike group. They had extremely high initial mobility until they dropped, followed by good ground mobility and moderate firepower. They were designed to get behind enemy lines and fight back towards the front or capture a major airport or spaceport to bring in heavier weapons. Airborne Groups were usually the first units to "kick in the door" in a planetary invasion. Airborne Groups had three Infantry Companies (typically where the Major and Sergeant Major operate), two Tank Companies (made up of lighter tanks), and a Rig Company (made up exclusively of light rigs), for a total of 4206 soldiers.
  • Mobile Assault Groups emphasized ground-based mobility and firepower. They were well-suited for combat patrol, recon in force, ground superiority, and assaulting enemies that are on the move. Mobile Assault Groups were made up of four Tank Companies (often outfitted with Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Medium Tanks) and two Infantry Companies for a total of 3448 soldiers. The Major and Sergeant Major's headquarters was usually within one of the Tank Companies.
  • Artillery Groups were dedicated bombardment groups. They did not operate independently or deploy without their attached battalion. The Major and Sergeant Major had an established headquarters, usually in a mobile command post for more mobile operations or in a bunker on long-term deployments. Artillery Groups had six Artillery Batteries for a total of 162 soldiers.
  • Support Groups were dedicated logistics and support groups. They did not operate independently or deploy without their attached battalion. The Major and Sergeant Major usually operated from an established headquarters in the region of the supply dumps or warehouses, well behind the front lines in safe zones. Support Groups had five Logistics Companies. Support Groups also had a dedicated liaison to the Royal Imperial Air Force to call in transport aircraft as needed. Support Groups had a total of 2554 soldiers.

[edit] Company

All Companies were led by Captains, with a supporting Master Sergeant.

  • Infantry Companies had a Company Section (the Captain, the Master Sergeant, two flankers and four Infantry Squads) and four Infantry Platoons for a total of 1,172 soldiers.
  • Tank Companies had a Company Section (five tanks with the Captain and the Master Sergeant in the lead tank) and four Tank Platoons, for a total of 276 soldiers.
  • Rig Companies had a Company Section (the Captain's and Master Sergeant's rigs and 8 escorting rigs) and four Rig Platoons, for a total of 138 soldiers.
  • Artillery Batteries were the Company equivalent in artillery. They typically had five towed or self-propelled guns, and the crews to operate them. The Captain and Master Sergeant in charge of an Artillery Battery acted as communications officers in the chain of command and answered to the Combat Group commander. Artillery Batteries had a total of 27 soldiers.
  • Aviation Lances were made up of four VTOLs (one for the Captain, one for the Master Sergeant, and two escorts), and six Aviation Flights, for a total of 76 VTOLs and 304 soldiers.
  • Logisitics Companies were dedicated supply line and support teams. They had no set equipment load, but usually operate trucks and trailers for mobile support, and established warehouses and supply dumps for non-mobile support. A Logistics Company typically had 450 soldiers with varying jobs.

[edit] Platoon

All Platoons were led by First Lieutenants, with a supporting by a Sergeant First Class.

  • Infantry Platoons had a Platoon Squad (the First Lieutenant, the Sergeant First Class, two flankers, and four Fire Teams) and three Infantry Sections for a total of 272 soldiers.
  • Tank Platoons had a Platoon Command Tank (with the First Lieutenant and Staff Sergeant) and three Tank Sections, for a typical total of 64 soldiers.
  • Rig Platoons had a Platoon Squad (the First Lieutenant's and Staff Sergeant's Rigs) and three Rig Sections, for a total of 32 soldiers.

[edit] Section

All Sections were led by Second Lieutenants, with a supporting Staff Sergeant.

  • Infantry Sections had a Section Team (the Second Lieutenant, the Staff Sergeant, and two flankers), and four Infantry Squads for a total of 84 soldiers.
  • Tank Sections had five tanks, with the Second Lieutenant in command of the lead tank. Tank Sections vary based on their arsenal, but typically have a total of 20 soldiers.
  • Rig Sections had a Section Squad (the Second Lieutenant's and Staff Sergeant's Rigs) and four Rig squads, for a total of 10 soldiers.

[edit] Squad

All Squads were led by Sergeants.

  • Infantry Squads were led by Sergeants. Every Squad had a Command Team (the Sergeant, the senior Corporal, and two flankers), and four Fire Teams, for a total of 20 soldiers.
  • Tanks Squads were a single tank operating team. Tanks typically took a crew of four to operate. Some Main Battle Tanks could take up to six, but some tank designs only had a single operator.
  • Rig Squads were a team of two Rigs.

[edit] Fire Team

The Fire Team was exclusively an Infantry level of organization. Tanks were operated by large crews, and Rigs were too expensive to field in the same numbers as infantry.

An Infantry Fire Team consisted of four soldiers: the Fire Team leader (usually a Corporal), a rear-gaurd and two flankers.

Each man on the Fire Team could be equipped with any individual combat weapon in the Royal Imperial Army's arsenal, or the entire team could operate a single crew-served infantry weapon.

Some Fire Teams were specialty units: an Infantry Squad typically had a Sniper Team, SAW Team, or Heavy Weapons Team. Squads rarely had more than one specialty team.

[edit] Imperial Military Specification

The "M" designation has been used for "MilSpec" or "Military Specification" for centuries. The Onyx Empire used a standardized numbering series for MilSpec. The first number in the designation indicates an entirely different military specification. For example, the M-1 specification and the M-2 specification are entirely different things. A lower-case letter sub-designation indicates an extension of the original idea. For example, the M-8 and M-8a are both grenades, but use different types of ordinance. A second number indicates a revision in the specification. For example, the M-3 is the original specification, but the M-3-4 is the fourth generation revision of the specification.

The Royal Imperial Army used the following systems:
