Royal Imperial Labs

The Royal Imperial Labs was a scientific and engineering development body that operated under the Onyx Empire. The labs had multiple heads of staff, each operating out of different laboratories. Reg Brenstein and Josiah Hlow were notable heads of staff.
The labs were eventually dissolved along with the rest of the Onyx Empire, though many laboratories were absorbed into the Federated Districts of the Prefecture.

[edit] Aerospace Laboratory
The Aerospace Laboratory was a combination of construction and aerospace research assets. It was responsible for many airframes developed and used by the Onyx Empire, particularly "Project Raven" which resulted in the F-4 Raven fighter. The laboratory's director was Dr. Thomas deGraff, who later went on to have majority ownership of Alexi-Wrought Airworks.
[edit] Vehicle Laboratory
The Vehicle Laboratory was responsible for developing combat platforms such as tanks and similar. Reg Brenstein was in charge of this laboratory, and is credited for the creation of the combat rig with his "Herculean Project". The Vehicle Laboratory and Aerospace Laboratory had joint oversight of the development of warships, until Haven Shipyards gained autonomous control of its budget and research staff in 2302.

The Chemical Laboratory was responsible for developing composites, propellants, and other useful compounds for the Onyx Empire's war machine. The head researcher and director of the laboratory was Dr. Terri Ewing.
During the military's pre-war build-up, the Physics Laboratory operated a production facility for armor and munitions under the name "Everest Composites".
[edit] Cryptography Laboratory
The Cryptography Laboratory was responsible for developing cryptographic systems and breaking enemy codes. The chief cryptographer, Yul Besud, was noted for his role in cracking the United Earth Alliance's election system and allowing the Onyx Empire to usurp the role of the Assembly on Ah Kin.

The Energy Laboratory was responsible for developing compact fission reactors and energy cells for the use in aircraft and vehicles. Dr. Richard Holder ran the Energy Laboratory.
During the Second Exodus War, the Onyx Empire managed to capture a few Omega Bombs from the United Mesarthrim Clans. The weapons were turned over to the Energy Laboratory for study, in hopes of mastering Omega radiation. While the Energy Laboratory was never able to master Omega radiation based weaponry, they did discover its link to Subspace, and their research was eventually developed into the Entropy Drive.

The Physics Laboratory was responsible for developing advanced physics theories, particularly the implementation of advanced hyperspace drives. Erika Strout was in charge of this laboratory.
During the military's pre-war build-up, the Physics Laboratory operated a production facility for hyperspace drives and shield systems under the name "Atlan Dynamics".
[edit] Project: Terminator
"Project: Terminator" was one of Dr. Strout's pet projects. She believed that it was possible to develop fine-tuned gravity manipulation technology, which she called "gravitics", into a high-power weapon known as a mass driver. Gravitics technology did not successfully emerge until after the Second Exodus War, but a magnetic version of the mass driver, known as the Magnetic Accelerator Cannon, was completed and used as a main warship weapon by the Royal Imperial Navy.
