Santeri Steinns was born in Nivala, Finland in 2272. He attended the National Defense University and graduated in 2294, but soon tired of the United Earth Alliance Space Agency and took up private trading, running the Luna/Io routes for the next twenty years.
In late 2313, the United Earth Alliance government began taxing Io Obsidian, a cornerstone commodity of Santeri’s trade routes.
In 2314, during an otherwise routine run Captain Steinns became the victim of piracy and his ship, the Päähenkilö Haaveilla (Star Dream), took heavy damage. Steinns personally blamed the United Earth Alliance Space Agency for their lack of response to his distress calls, and combined with the losses he had already taken from the new taxes, Santeri was forced to sell his beloved Päähenkilö Haaveilla just to pay off his debts.
After the Imperial invasion in 2315, Steinns received a call from the Päähenkilö Haaveilla's former First Mate, telling him that the Royal Imperial Navy was looking for experienced captains, and he thought Steinns might be interested.
Steinns wanted to correct the injustices done to him by the United Earth Alliance government, Steinns signed on and was given command of the HMS Cougar.
Steinns is a level-headed commander, older than many of his peers but with years of experience as a civilian starship commander. He has a soft spot for commercial traders. Some consider his age a liability and question his loyalty to the Empire.
Steinns maintained a close friendship with his first officer on the Cougar, Akilina Boklov, though he quickly realized her mission from the Alphas and spent many years secretly trying to break down her brainwashing.
