Law Enforcement is a civilian role in the Prefecture government. If a member of the military wishes to serve as a law enforcement officer, they must resign first.

[edit] Federal Department of Law Enforcement

FDLE is in charge of investigating crimes and prosecuting criminals on a local, planetary, and national level in the Prefecture. It works with foreign police forces and the international Space Police to prosecute international criminals.

FDLE has neighborhood patrols, warrant services, SWAT teams, K9 officers, and investigators on a local level. Planetary and national coordination is handled by FDLE agents.

The Federal Department of Law Enforcement has a multitude of duties in the Prefecture. While it is an armed government agency, the FDLE agents and police officers are all civilians. While they take an oath of office, they have no obligation to remain on duty if they choose to quit, unlike a soldier in the field.

Director Craig Wilson was appointed head of the Department when it was formed in September of 2323, and under his direction the Department works like a well-oiled machine.

Under normal operation, FDLE handles multiple areas of law enforcement and safety.

The FDLE Police handles all criminal apprehension within the Prefecture (international crime is handled by the Inquisitors). Typically, the Police have self-contained stations in different cities on different worlds. Usually, if a criminal jumps planet, his or her apprehension is handled by FDLE Agents instead of lower-tier Police, or the Inquisitors or Alliance of Planets Space Police are brought in to assist.

The FDLE Bureau of Space Enforcement is in charge of space related crimes. They act as spaceport security, customs, and can be hired to act as ship-board security by particularly nervous merchants looking for extra muscle. The extra work on the side brings more funding to the FDLE, so no one complains...except pirates. FDLE BSE also has access to the Navy and Air Force to help track down criminals who have fled into space, though for most planet-jumpers, they work with the Alliance of Planets Space Police instead of the Prefecture Navy.
